Garret: Meaning and Etymology

Garret: though the top room of a house is now little more than a lumber room, garret in Mediaeval English meant a look-out, or a watch-tower.
Shakespeare in Henry VI says: 'He did speak them to me in the garret, one night, as we were scouring my Lord of York’s armour'.
The word garrison comes from the same root, meaning a supply of soldiers for a fortified place.
